Aaron Lehman Financial Professional

Let me tell you why I do what I do

When a parent dies especially at a young age, you lose a parent, spouse, and an income.  The latter can be prevented and this is how my career became personal and now I never judge a book by its cover.

It was in the evening of the summer of 2002 and I was new into my financial professional practice when I called a young man who responded to a letter for an appointment and the promise of a free baby spoon.

The next evening, I drove down a 2 lane country road. I arrived and saw a 2 bedroom house in the country surrounded by corn fields.  After stepping out of my Honda Civic Hatchback, a man stood up wearing a ripped pair of jeans and a white T-shirt with grease on it from his second generation Ford Mustang and shook my hand. He introduced me to his wife who was wearing shorts and a shirt with a zipped up sweater over holding their baby who was wrapped in a thin blanket. Behind them was a swing set with a baby swing.

Honestly, when I saw their situation, and because I was working in a big financial firm that valued assets over clients,  I really didn’t think I would be able to help them.

The husband looked at me and said, “I am concerned about providing for my young family and don’t know where to start.”  “I have a job that pays the bills and my wife is a stay at home mom.”  At that time I was a young father of a toddler and a baby so I asked “have you thought about what would happen if you no longer were there to provide for them?”

He said, “I never thought about that”. I proceeded to tell him, “One of the first things I bought when my son was born  was life insurance.  You can buy a $100,000 term life policy for $15.00 a month to protect your wife and daughter”.  then he said, “I am saving money to upgrade the engine and radio on my car and I don’t have the extra money.”  I was thinking that I didn’t have anything to lose since he wasn’t interested so I said, “Will the car be a nice place for your wife and daughter to live in if they cannot pay the rent?”  After thinking about that, he proceeded to buy life insurance.  After delivering the policy I honestly didn’t think of him again because I was trained to look for assets and not the person.

It was the fall of 2005 and I was outside playing with my kids in the crisp air when I received a call from a young woman crying hysterically.  It took a second and then I realized that it was the wife of the man I sold the life insurance policy to three years ago.  “John died and I do not know what to do.”  The next day I met with her and said “you will be ok financially because of the life insurance”. 2 weeks later delivered a check to his wife and daughter.

I am happy that I help clients that bigger companies might overlook. Because of situations like this, I will always be independent and value the person, not their assets.

A lot of people are 1 tragedy away from something drastic happening.  I pride myself in being able to explain things in a way that changes the lives of my clients and providing hope instead of despair.
